One of the most spectacular sights against snow cover in winter is the deep red and black male northern cardinal, although the more subdued female with its dominant pale brown with bright red highlights is arguably the more elegant of the two.

"They don't migrate, and they don't molt into a dull plumage, so they're still breathtaking in winter's snowy backyards," says Cornell Lab of Ornithology. "In summer, their sweet whistles are one of the first sounds of the morning."
