The Kankakee City Council agreed with Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong and her choice for the new city engineer as Bourbonnais-based Piggush Engineering was hired by an 8-4 vote Monday.
Piggush Engineering, headed by Neil Piggush, takes over for Tyson Engineering of Kankakee. Tyson Engineering had been the firm of choice for the Kankakee administration nearly every year since the 1950s.
However, Wells-Armstrong was looking for a fresh set of eyes for Kankakee and recruited Piggush. David Tyson completed his duties at the end of the meeting the vote was taken to replace him.
Due to conflicts of interest, Dennis Baron, R-6, an attorney who represents Piggush, and Stacy Gall, who's husband, Mike, works with Piggush, abstained from the vote.
Alderman Carl Brown, D-7, who voted in favor of Piggush Engineering taking over this role, told the council that this may have been his toughest vote. He thanked Tyson for his years of work and thanked him for his years of loyal service.
Tyson was given a standing ovation following the vote.
